I received a $2000 refund check this year for college. When I file taxes this year, will I owe taxes on that amount since I did not use it for educational purposes? And none of this money was from loans.

My best friend and I are both High School sophomores, but she is enrolled in college classes as well, not dual enrollment through our school, her parents required her to do it.
She doesn’t get amazing grades in her college classes (I’ve never seen her pass any of those classes with anything higher than a B) and her grades in regular school are slipping as well, but she’s still got this notion that she’s going straight to graduate school and I’m rather worried that that’s not going to happen.
How likely is it?
I’m an undergraduate physics major and I’m going to apply for graduate schools soon for physics, but I don’t think that I want to go to graduate school unless it’s at one of the top 10 universities for physics.
Is this a really stupid notion? I just don’t want to be considered a joke.
