Do they want to know about my kids, my single parentness, why I’m back in college so late, my jobs, my whole life? I know it’s a "personal statement" but how personal should I get?
I would Include that you are a single parent of x number of kids, this shows that you have determination to beat the odds, and accomplish potentially insurmountable tasks. Talk about your jobs, why you want a degree, and why now is the time to get it. Tell the admissions board about your strengths, and tell them that you know you have weaknesses (mention what they are) and that you are working on strengthening those parts of your life. Mention any Interests that you have, and what you plan on majoring in.

That site lists a variety of scholarships. Is probably worth a look.
